2009-01-21 Nine out of ten are positive to donation

The Swedish people are continuously positive to donate their organs and tissues after their death. Almost nine out of ten whom has made an active choice has decided pro donation. This is the result of an opinion poll carried out by Donationsrådet, The Swedish council for organ and tissue donation in November 2008.

- We already knew that many Swedes are spontaneously positive to organ and tissue donation but we didn’t know how many that actually had made an active decision and made their will known. It is a big step from a positive attitude to really act. It is a very positive thing to see that nine out of ten that have made an active decision wants to donate their organs and tissues after their passing away, says Åsa Welin director of Donationsrådet.

The survey shows that a majority (58%) has made an active decision and of these, nine out of ten decided pro organ and tissue donation.

- The survey also shows that almost half of the people (48%) whom have made their will known also had filled in a donor’s card compared to about a fourth (26%) of the people who has registered in the Swedish donor’s register and a fifth of those who has told their relatives. This is a very good acknowledgment for our work with the donor’s cards, but it is still very important to inform relatives and next of kin and let them know your own position, says Åsa Welin.

The survey was performed by Synovate 10-13 November 2008 and 1022 Swedes, 16 years old and older, participated.
